A Place To Call Home

Feature Film, Thriller

A broken family’s cross-country road trip is derailed when a flat tire in backcountry Georgia leaves them stranded with a nefarious neighbor.

SUMMARY

Aaliyah, Ashley and Kevin are traveling along I-95 in south Georgia when a tire blows leaving them stranded. They seek help at a near by house, and are greeted by a woman named Lorelei, standing beside a confederate flag. She welcomes the family inside to await her husband’s return. Fortunate for them, he’s a mechanic. Unfortunate for them, Lorelei has already killed him. By the time they discover the body, Lorelei is long gone. Help is on the way. But the only suspects left at the site of a murder, trespassing in a Red County is the last place they’d want to be found. Divided on how to proceed, Aaliyah tries to cover up the evidence. No crime, no punishment. Her younger sister Ashley rebels against this plan and makes a play at fleeing the scene. But when their little brother Kevin tags along, she quickly realizes she’s ill-equipped to be in charge. Just as she’s about to turn back, they find Lorelei…

A place to Call Home is an experimental dive into the psyche of a Black parent. Everyone leaves this place a bit darker than when they arrived. The act of choosing to preserve yourself seems so simple until it means actively putting someone else in harms way. And then, you must decide that your life is more important to you than theirs’s. If it’s a stranger, it’s not so bad. If it’s your family, you’ll always be the bad guy for abandoning them.

Artist Statement

My work typically deals with larger socio-political themes. A Place to Call Home is an exploration of unconscious bias. Where the audience chooses to align themselves and who is perceived as the danger at the start of this journey has everything to do with an internal polarity for the face of good and the face of evil. Nothings wrong until everything is wrong and the only way to anticipate what will happen next is based on gut instinct.
